Who has it . . ?
School
choice has long
been Florida's policy at the post-secondary level. Florida students
apply to
the colleges or trade schools of their choice. The state then provides
tax-funded vouchers to help pay for the tuition at the school that
enrolls the
student, whether it is state or private, secular or religiously
affiliated. The
state funds the individuals seeking an education. Those individuals
then fund
the institutions providing it.
School
choice is also the policy for our
preschoolers. All Florida parents of four-year-olds may select the
preschool,
childcare center, or childcare home they judge best for their children – public or private,
secular or faith-based. The
state provides the parents with Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)
Vouchers to pay
for the fees. Almost 9 of 10 families direct them to private
prekindergarten
providers.
Thus all Florida parents have school choice before and after the K-12
years. We
are provided with tax-funded vouchers to send our four-year-olds and
our
college students to the public or private schools we judge best.
What about the
K-12 years?
